Overview

The Hospital Teacher role supports the educational needs of severely emotionally disturbed students aged 6 to 18 years of age who are requiring acute stabilization with the BayPointe Hospital.  The average length of stay for a child in the hospital is 9-11 days. The Hospital Teacher works closely with the Education Liaison to obtain current school assignments/homework and to provide student instruction between multiple units to ensure all students remain on track with their education curriculum. The Hospital Teacher is responsible for providing educational instruction and daily direction to the Education Liaison in order to ensure students keep pace with their current school curriculum. 

This is a 9 month school schedule position that will receive the same Christmas, Summer, and Spring Break schedule as the Mobile County Public School System. 

 

Responsibilities

Communicates with local Public Schools for consumers being admitted into BayPointe Hospital.

  1. Instructs students individually and in group settings in accordance with identified needs
  2. Writes and makes available daily/weekly plans so that other staff can provide appropriate instructions to students when the teacher is absent
  3. Provides hand off communication to Educational Liaison regarding student needs to support positive adjustment by the student following discharge from the facility.
  4. Completes an educational discharge summary and progress report at time of discharge. This summary will be provided to the Educational Liaison at the time of discharge or no later than 11 am the following day.
  5. Consults with local school faculty to obtain/provide student information as needed for consumers
  6. Administers assessment to determine student’s present level of performance in reading and math to acute care consumers upon admission, in order to provide work on their accurate grade performance level. 
  7. Provides consumers with daily work obtained from consumers’ respective schools or from on-site resources; ensures that all work and/or grades are provided to the Educational Liaison upon consumer’s discharge, or no later than 11 am the following day. 
  8. Provides daily documentation of consumer’s attendance and classroom participation and ensures that students sign in the classroom sign in log daily. 
  9. Provides consult to school personnel regarding student needs through conferences, phone contacts, and/or in writing as needed to support positive adjustment by the student following discharge from the facility
  10. Documents classroom participation and progress daily in the electronic medical record
  11. Completes other duties as assigned.

Carries out administrative duties in accordance with established schedules and procedures

  1. Informs supervisor of any needed classroom supplies in a timely manner in order to ensure that classroom is adequately stocked with needed materials at all time.
  2. Notifies Educational Liaison daily of work received and/or continued need
  3. Notifies supervisor and Facilitator of Academics of failure to obtain school work from the zoned school within 48 hours of intake
  4. Maintains an effective professional relationship with all program staff as well as with all external contacts made during the course of fulfilling job related duties
  5. Appropriately delegates routine task to behavioral staff to assist with classroom needs.
  6. Ensures that supervisory personnel are adequately informed regarding classroom operations

  5. Demonstrates the ability to recognize the elements of a crisis state and knows how to deescalate or resolve the situation
  6. Attends to required in-service training and other workshops

Qualifications

Minimim Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Education
  • Alabama teacher’s certification in secondary education

 

Knowledge in child/adolescent specialty, outlined below, to be attained within (6) months of employment:

  • Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in child and adolescent populations
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity
  • Knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention and interventions common to acute psychotic consumers, as well as, non-violent crisis intervention practices
  • Knowledge of Psychiatric Rehabilitation principles
  • Knowledge of educational methods with children and adolescents with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders, as well as, behavior problems

Physical Requirements of the Job: 

  • Frequent standing, sitting, and walking which are in bursts of 5 to 10 minutes, there are times when this can be extended to pacing with the consumer (time could be undetermined) and at times sitting and standing can be extended with the employee having the ability to change positions as permitted by the observance and behavior of the consumer at that time
  • Occasional forward bending from the hips while kneeling to reach to the side
  • Occasional need to be able to assume a full squat/lunge from a standing position
  • Occasional need to maintain back extension while being on stomach with one’s own body weight on hips and legs, this position is maintained for several minutes
  • Occasionally, be able to put one’s own body weight on one knee and one elbow on the same side of one’s body
  • Occasionally, be able to kneel and reach to same side toward the floor.
  • Lift up to 10 pounds occasionally during shift
  • Strong grasp is needed to use keys to open doors throughout the facility, and to maintain constant contact with a consumer during a restraint procedure or with other hold techniques
  • Pushing/pulling force up to 25 pounds occasionally during a shift
