Responsibilities

Primary Job Functions:

 

Clinical responsibilities

  •   Arranges daily activities based on urgency of requests for samples.
  • Identifies consumers and their personal information using two identifiers.
  • Determines the right venipuncture method based on consumer age, health, etc.
  • Provides reassurance to consumers and helps them relax.
  • Able to identify veins that are suitable for puncture.
  • Obtains blood using sterile technique, with sterilized needles, vials, and other equipment.
  • Ensures optimal quality and quantity of samples.
  • Labels samples correctly and sends or delivers them for testing.
  • Adheres to all relevant health and safety standards while working.
  • Makes copies, faxes document, and performs other related clerical duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, i.e., telehealth, staff relief, etc.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize the elements of a crisis state and knows how to deescalate or resolve the situation.
  • Greets all consumers in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Communicates effectively with all team members.
  • Any other assignments as deemed necessary per supervisor.

Supervision and consultation.

  • Seeks supervision and consultation as needed.
  • Accepts and employs suggestions for improvements.
  • Actively works to enhance skills.
  • Provides regular feedback to supervisor on issues/problems pertaining to work functions. 

Courteous and respectful towards consumers, visitors, and co-worker.

  • Treats consumers and co-workers with care, dignity, and compassion
  • Respects consumers’ and employees’ privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assists consumers, visitors and employees as needed.

Administrative and other related duties as assigned.

  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Actively participates in AltaPointe committees as required.
  • Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Works in a cooperative manner with other AltaPointe employees.
  • Follows AltaPointe policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Possesses current Phlebotomy certification to practice in the state of Alabama.  Knowledge of adult and child specialties outlined below to be attained within six (6) months of employment. Train the Trainer certification preferred or documented experience in provision of educational topics.

  • Knowledge of cultural diversity.
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment including computers and programs (PowerPoint,
  • Excel, etc.)
  • Knowledge of AHS policy and procedures as it applies to presentations.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards of organization’s monitoring agencies (The Joint
  • Commission (JC), DMH, DHR, Medicaid, CMS)
  • Proven experience as a phlebotomist or Phlebotomy Technician
  • Experience with effective puncture techniques
  • Understanding of proper patient identification methods.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements about drawing blood, handling fluid samples and use of
  • relevant medical equipment and material
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to connect with various types of consumers and make them feel comfortable.
