  • Overview

    The LeMoyne School is a classroom and day treatment program, housed at BayPointe Hospital, developed to meet the educational and therapeutic needs of severely emotionally disturbed students 6 to 18 years of age who are unable to maintain appropriate behaviors in a public school setting.  A child/adolescent must manifest a combination of at least three criteria whose severity could prevent treatment in a less restrictive environment.  LeMoyne School also offers an 8 to 10 week day-treatment program during the summer months without an educational component.

     

    This teaching position follows the public school system schedule and pay.  

    Responsibilities

    General responsibilities

    1. Instructs students individually in accordance with identified needs
    2. Consults with treatment team to ensure utilization of a behavior management system that is consistent with the system used in other program components
    3. Is responsible for planning and scheduling educational field trips and actively participates as required. May drive program vehicle during such trips
    4. Identifies educational needs of consumers in preparation for summer tutorial services
    5. Writes and makes available daily/weekly lesson plans so that other staff can provide appropriate instructions to students to continue the educational program in the teacher’s absence
    6. Demonstrates the ability to recognize the elements of a crisis state and knows how to deescalate or resolve the situation
    7. Applies seclusion and restraint per AltaPointe Policy and Procedure, as required

     

    Assesses educational needs of students on an on-going basis and makes appropriate adjustments to educational plans as needed:

    1. Administers educational testing within 10 days of consumer’s admission to program and prior to student’s discharge
    2. Works with Special Education teacher to meet IEP goals
    3. Completes an educational discharge summary and final report card at time of discharge
    4. Provides both verbal and written consultation/progress reports to parents/guardians as needed
    5. Ensures compliance of students’ educational records in accordance with guidelines established by the State Department of Education
    6. Maintains awareness of current techniques and approaches to the educational process as they relate to the population being used

    Carries out administrative duties in accordance with established schedules and procedures:

    1. Determines classroom supplies and maintains sufficient supplies
    2. Conducts meetings with classroom staff to address progress/problems and overall teamwork issues, as needed.
    3. Maintains an effective professional relationship with all program staff as well as with all external contact made during the course of fulfilling job related duties
    4. Appropriately delegates routine tasks to behavioral staff such that student needs can be met without disruption
    5. Attends treatment team meetings as scheduled related to clinical planning and administrative issues

     Performs liaison services with the local educational system for students at BayPointe:

    1. Ensures that appropriate placement is made and that needed services will be provided to the student
    2. Monitors the student’s adjustment to school placement and shares information with school/residential staff
    3. Provides consult to school personnel regarding student needs through conferences, phone contacts and/or in writing as needed to support positive adjustment by the student following discharge from the facility

    2. Actively participates in AltaPointe committees as required
    3. Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner
    4. Follows AltaPointe policies and procedures
    5. Attends to required in-service training and other workshops

    Qualifications

    Bachelor degree in special education

    Alabama teacher’s certification in secondary education

    Highly qualified preferred

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • There is frequent standing, sitting, and walking which are in bursts of 5 to 10 minutes. However, there are times when this can be extended to pacing with the consumer (time could be undetermined), and at times sitting and standing can be extended with the employee having the ability to change positions as permitted by the observance and behavior of the consumer at that time.
    • There is occasional forward bending from the hips while kneeling to reach to the side.
    • There is an occasional need to be able to assume a full squat/lunge from a standing position.
    • There is an occasional need to maintain back extension while being on stomach with one’s own body weight on hips and legs.  This position is maintained for several minutes.
    • Occasionally, be able to put one’s own body weight on one knee and one elbow on the same side of one’s body.
    • Occasionally, be able to kneel and reach to same side toward the floor.
    • Lift up to 15 pounds from the floor to various levels, including from floor to overhead occasionally during shift.
    • Have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds to assist in activities of daily living, as required. Be able to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
    • Strong grasp is needed to use keys to open doors throughout the facility, and to maintain constant contact with a consumer during a restraint procedure or with other hold techniques.
    • Pushing/pulling force up to 25 pounds occasionally during shift.
    • At times, be able to ambulate in a quick manner (jog/run) for distances up to 50 feet.
    • Carrying up to 15 pounds various distances throughout the facility.
    • Occasional step ladder climbing to retrieve medical records that are on higher shelves.
    • Fine manipulation/dexterity to handle medical records and complete documentation.
    • At times therapy may be inside or outside the facility; therefore, some activities will dictate physical requirements for playing or games.
