  • Responsibilities

    Child/Adolescent Clinical Responsibilities:

    1. Provides psychiatric evaluation and treatment of the consumer
    2. Provides appropriate medication management of the consumer
    3. Utilizes assessment data to support a DSMIV diagnosis
    4. Demonstrates the ability to recognize the elements of a crisis state and knows how to deescalate, resolve the situation or refer the consumer for hospitalization.
    5. Effectively collaborates with the collaborating physician if indicated, referral physicians, treatment team members and outside sources in the delivery of clinical services.
    6. Evaluates the consumer for discharge planning.
    7. Effectively demonstrates the application of child/adolescent specific competencies.
    8. Adheres to professional code of ethics.
    9. Evaluates for side-effects of medication, particularly tardive dyskinesia and effectively addresses the problem.
    10. Practices appropriate standards of care.
    11. Written prescriptions adhere to recommended dose and other information as identified in the PDR.
    12. Practices according to the Certified Nurse Practitioner Protocol as outlined by the Alabama Board of Nursing (See Attachment - Section E).
    13. Prescribes medications per the approved formulary for Certified Nurse Practitioner as approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing and Alta Pointe policy and procedures 


    Possesses current Alabama license to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner with collaborative physician and prescriptive authority.  

    • Knowledge of the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric disorders in the child/adolescent and adult populations.
    • Knowledge of growth and development as related to all intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of the consumer’s development.
    • Knowledge of principles of play therapy.
    • Knowledge of behavior management.
    • Knowledge of family dynamic and parenting issues.
    • Knowledge of effects and treatment of physical/sexual/emotional abuse and neglect issues.
    • Knowledge of the nature of addiction for referral purposes
    • Knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention and interventions common to acute psychotic consumers, as well as, to non-violent crisis intervention practice
    • Knowledge of educational methods appropriate to adults and children with psychiatric disorders
    • Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation principles
    • Knowledge of community resources as applied to child/adolescent and adult populations.
    • Knowledge of cultural differences.
